National Institute of Technology Rourkela with an objective of having continuous employment opportunity invites online applications for faculty positions at the level of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor in various specializations of Engineering, Architecture, Science, Humanities, and Management. Important Note:
  • This is a ROLLING ADVERTISEMENT Online applications are invited throughout the year. Candidates will be allowed to update their qualifications, experience and other credentials in the online application portal throughout. However, when a sizable number of applications (as decided by the authority) are received in the online application portal, a cutoff date will be announced on the Institute’s website considering the vacancy positions and requirement department-wise. A notification to update the applications will be given through the Institute’s website/application portal/email/SMS fifteen days prior to that cutoff date. All qualifications and experiences will be considered up to the cutoff date. After this date, applications will be extracted from the application portal for scrutiny and the online portal will be reset for receiving applications again.
  • Reservation norms will be followed as per G.O.I. norms. The candidates belonging to the reserved category (SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwD) are required to attach the Caste/Category Certificate in the format as prescribed by the Govt. of India.

General Information
  • 1)NIT Rourkela has adopted the four-tier flexible faculty structure for NITs. Any new guidelines and/or clarifications issued by the Ministry of Education, GOI shall be applicable at any stage of selection process.

  • 3)No person, (i) who had entered into or contracted a marriage with a person having a spouse living; or (ii) who is having a spouse alive, has entered into or contracted a marriage with any person, shall be eligible for appointment to the said post.
  • 4)As an Institute of National Importance, NIT Rourkela strives to have a workforce, which reflects an all-India character and hence candidates from all over the country and also from abroad are encouraged to apply.

  • 6)Fresh appointment beyond the age of 60 years is discouraged except in the case of faculty with exceptional research, industrial, and/or academic career.
  • 7)The cumulative essential credit point requirement is the minimum eligibility for scrutiny. Merely satisfying this does not ensure final shortlisting/appointment/ promotion for any candidate.
  • 8)The scrutiny committee constituted for the purpose in each department may set shortlisting criteria higher than the minimum criteria as advertised for different positions to arrive at a reasonable number of candidates to be called for presentation and/or interview.
  • 9)Since departments/subjects/specializations are many and not comparable with each other, following a uniform standard/norm for shortlisting of candidates by a department is not feasible. Hence, departments may fix different criteria for different positions/Pay Levels and also for different specialization if required during scrutiny.
  • 10)The Scrutiny Committee may reject a candidate on his third or further attempt, if the candidate has failed to be selected for the same post in two previous attempts even if he meets the shortlisting criteria, except when there is significant new achievement justifying an exception.
  • 11) It is mandatory to have personal appearance in the interview of the applicants who are residing in India. However candidates located outside the country and otherwise not in a position of attending the personal interview may be interviewed through virtual mode at the discretion of the Selection Committee.
  • 12) Candidates shortlisted for interview will have to produce original documents for verification in support of their application regarding reservation category, educational qualification, experience, and other claims.
  • 13) Apart from merit, the specialization of a candidate within a department will play a vital role in selection. Candidates with specialization in immediate need by departments may be given preference. Candidates with work experience in reputed Universities, Institutions or Industry or with greater relevance to the academic programmes of a department will be given preference. The Institute’s decision on reputation of other universities/institutes shall be final.
  • 14) If a candidate is found to be suitable for a lower post (or Pay Level) than the post he/she had applied, may be offered with the lower post based on the recommendation of the Selection Committee. Similarly, experienced and/or meritorious candidates may be offered higher starting pay on the recommendation of the Selection Committee.
  • 15) Candidates may be posted and/or transferred to another post/department at any time during service career, in the interest of the Institute.
  • 16) Information regarding application status, interview schedule, etc. will be made available in the institute’s recruitment portal only. The Institute will not be responsible in any manner if a candidate fails to visit / access the portal in time. Candidates are advised to regularly visit and login to the Institute’s recruitment portal for update status/ information once their application status is under scrutiny. Application IDs of the shortlisted candidates only will be displayed in the Institute website.
  • 17) The Institute reserves the right to call short-listed candidates for presentation and/or interview. The Institute reserves the right to defer or cancel the selection process at any stage without assigning any reason thereof. The Institute also reserves the right to consider and to fill or not to fill any positions in any of the specialization(s)/ department(s)/ centre(s).
  • 18) The decision of the Institute in all matters will be final and binding on all the applicants who responded to this advertisement. No interim correspondence or unsolicited query will be entertained from the candidates in connection with the process of scrutiny/selection including reasons for not being shortlisted for personal interview.
  • 19) Any dispute with regard to the selection / recruitment process will be subject to Courts / Tribunals having jurisdiction over Rourkela, Odisha.
  • 20) The candidates called for presentation/interview will be reimbursed travelling expenses in second AC train fare from the place of their residence in India to Rourkela, and back by the shortest route. Reimbursement for air travel within India, if any, will be limited to second AC train fare only. Candidates should come prepared to stay at Rourkela for more than one day at their own cost.
  • 21) Serving faculty members of NIT, Rourkela (internal candidates) shall be eligible to apply for higher post or Pay Level in their own department irrespective of their minimum eligibility and specialization, if they satisfy other criteria. However, there shall be no distinction between external and internal candidates with regard to the requirements of essential qualification, cumulative essential credit point and experience as mentioned in the RR.
  • 22) All selected candidates will be under probation and will be confirmed subject to satisfactory completion of their probation period and other requirements as per the Institute rule.
  • 23) The candidate is responsible for the correctness of the information provided in the application. If it is found at a later stage that any information given in the application is incorrect/false, the candidature/appointment is liable to be cancelled/terminated.

All online applications received till a cutoff date against Rolling Advertisement will be taken into consideration for scrutiny only. The following process will be adopted for shortlisting and selection.

Step 1: Applications will be scrutinized first at Department level by the respective Department Faculty Advisory Committee (DFAC). DFAC will verify the academic credentials, area of specialization, credit points as claimed by the applicants, and forward a list of suitable candidates to the Advisory Committee on Faculty Recruitment (ACoFAR).
Step 2: Final shortlisting of candidates will be done by the Institute’s ACoFAR committee. It will further ensure that the credit points, academic credentials, category certificate and other uploaded documents are in strict conformity with the Recruitment Rules and guidelines as prescribed by Ministry of Education, GoI.
Step 3: Application IDs of final shortlisted candidates only will be displayed in the Institute’s website. Those candidates will also be intimated through email about the dates for seminar presentation and/or personal interview by Selection Committee.
Step 4: Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a seminar presentation in the respective department. The concerned DFAC, along with other faculty members of department will communicate their feedback about the candidate to the Selection Committee through the HOD.
Step 5: Candidates participated in seminar presentation will be invited to appear before a Selection Committee for personal interview, after physical verification of their original documents.
Step 6: Recommendations of the Selection Committee will be placed before Board of Governors (BoG) of the Institute for final approval as per procedure, and requirement/vacancy positions.
Step 7: Successful candidates will be issued with appointment order by Registrar of the Institute

In addition to normal pay and allowances as applicable to the central government employees stationed at Rourkela, following additional incentives are also available to the faculty members:

  • Under Professional Development Allowance (PDA) as per Institute guidelines - Full funding for presenting a paper or chairing session in national/international conference, membership of professional societies and purchase of books, limited to ₹3 Lakh in 3 years for all taken together is admissible. (Institute’s policy may change from time to time as per GOI guidelines)
  • Reimbursement of telephone charges (Maximum₹500 per month).
  • TA/DA to join the Institute as per GOI guidelines.
  • Attractive medical facility including referral to outside specialized and reputed hospitals.
  • Suitable residential accommodation as per rules subject to availability is provided in the Institute Campus. HRA may be paid if the Institute cannot provide accommodation.
  • Seed Money as initial research grant (amount as approved by BoG) to newly recruited faculties.
